POSITION SUMMARY

The Arts Program Intern supports the South Salt Lake Arts Council with community art activities. special events, and communications. This position is part-time, up to 20 hours per week.

The Arts Program Intern reports to the Arts Council Manager and supports the South Salt Lake Arts Council under the direction of its Board of Directors and its president, the South Salt Lake Mayor. The South Salt Lake Arts Council is a 501(c)(3) and a subsidiary of the City of South Salt Lake.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  1. Assists with the day-to-day operations of community arts programs.
    • Executes arts activities and programs for a wide variety of audiences including educators, artists, schools, funders, residents, families, and youth.
    • Responds promptly to inquiries and requests from participants and registrants.
    • Publishes calendar of activities.
    • Supports online registration system, contact and mailing lists.
    • Assists in recruiting and instructing volunteers.
    • Requests and coordinates donations of supplies or funding.
  2. Supports community art centers.
    • Staffs art room and other facilities as needed, during class hours, including afternoon and evenings.
    • Purchases and restocks supplies and equipment for classes.
  3. Supports arts council events.
    • Supports the planning and implementation of Craftoberfest, MuralFest, Celebrate South Salt Lake and Grid City Music Fest.
    • Assists in planning and executing activities, and recruiting artists, vendors, and volunteers.
    • Supports in executing events, including set-up, event activities, and breakdown.
  4. Assists in Arts Council communications.
    • Responds to inquiries by phone and email.
    • Creates marketing materials for promoting classes, activities and events and writes copy for e-newsletter, website, print, and social media.
    • Promotes programs and activities through Arts Council website, print, social media, and in-person events.
    • Supports social media communications, including Facebook and Instagram.
  5. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in art, art education, education, art history, or related field plus 2 or more years of related experience.
  • Experience in art education and working with a diversity of ages, cultures and languages is beneficial.
  • A valid Utah driver's license is recommended.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  1. Knowledge of Salt Lake County arts and education community.
  2. Knowledge of program operations. Knowledge of non-profit operations is helpful.
  3. Knowledge of basic budgeting and financing tools.
  4. Knowledge of arts education and community engagement and using art to build community.
  5. Skill in speaking or writing in multiple languages is helpful.
  6. Skill in task prioritizing and time management.
  7. Skill in communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  8. Skill in social media communications.
  9. Skill in interacting and supporting a diversity of people from a wide variety of backgrounds while displaying cultural competency, patience, and good customer service.
  10. Skill in marketing and outreach techniques and tools.
  11. Skill in creative problem solving and using good judgment to make decisions.
  12. Skill in word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphic design, website design and desktop publishing software.
  13. Skill in using office equipment and operating computers and mobile devices.
  14. Ability to work independently, self-directed and with a positive attitude.
  15. Ability to work as a team member in a fast-paced creative environment.
  16. Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
