The Autonomous Heavy Vehicle Driver will support the development of Autonomous Commercial Trucks at International. Serving as the vehicle safety driver and manual operator, this position is responsible for monitoring vehicle systems during autonomous operation, maintaining constant situational awareness, and intervening when necessary to ensure safety. The driver will document trip results, anomalies, and truck behavior in clear, accurate reports and communicate findings directly to the engineering team. Job Duties Safely operate and monitor autonomous trucks for up to 8 to 10 hours per shift, intervening manually when necessary to ensure safety. Perform vehicle inspections, including tire, fluid, and safety checks in accordance with DOT and OEM protocols. Maintain continuous situational awareness during autonomous driving, staying alert and responsive throughout the route. Document autonomous events, disengagements, and other operational observations using standardized report templates and onboard data acquisition tools. Clearly communicate with the Control Center, engineering, and safety teams during and after each route, providing timely feedback. Use GPS, onboard diagnostics, and system feedback monitors to support vehicle performance tracking and diagnostics. Follow all required site safety protocols, including PPE use and customer-specific safety orientations. Understand and apply OSHA, DOT, FMCSA, and ELD compliance requirements. Travel may be required for remote project or training assignments. A valid passport is strongly preferred. Perform other related duties as assigned by the site lead or engineers. Qualifications Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR). Must pass a DOT physical and meet all FMCSA and DOT qualification standards. Minimum five (5) years of recent Class A CDL experience required, with a mix of regional and OTR preferred. Familiarity with drop-and-hook and live load/unload procedures, yard moves and docking in mixed-traffic environments, coupling and uncoupling trailers, handling loaded vs. empty trailer dynamics and tractor-trailer combinations exceeding 70 feet. Experience operating SAE Level 2-4 autonomous or advanced commercial vehicles. Experience supporting OEM validation, fleet testing, or advanced vehicle technology programs. Proficient with electronic logging devices (ELDs) and modern in-cab systems. Tech-savvy and detail-oriented, with a problem-solving mindset. Collaborative team player with a background in cross-functional environments.
