Job Description
Transform your prototyping process
This guide walks you through turning an idea into a 3D-printed prototype using AI tools and Weissman Foundry printers.
By the end, you'll be able to:
- Generate refined design prompts using ChatGPT.
- Create and iterate images with AI tools (Midjourney, Firefly, etc.).
- Use Vizcom's Workbench to modify, variate, and generate 3D models.
- Export STL files and 3D print them at the Weissman Foundry using Bambu Studio.
Part A - From Text to Image
Step 1: Use ChatGPT (or Gemini/Bing) as a Metaprompt Writer
- Ask ChatGPT to write a detailed prompt for your image generator. Example: "Write a detailed Midjourney prompt for a minimalist wearable ring made of translucent resin on a white background. No text or logos. High quality, photorealistic."
- Critically analyze output/modify how you see fit
Step 2: Generate Images
- Paste ChatGPT's prompt into your chosen image generator (GPT, Midjourney, Firefly, Krea, Gemini, etc.)
- Iterate. If something looks off, return to ChatGPT to refine your prompt. Tell the AI what it got wrong or missed and ask to fix.
- Note: AI often struggles with text/logos-ignore any misspellings.
- Goal: End with your favorite, well-lit concept render.
Part B - Refining in Vizcom
Step 1: Set Up
• Create a free Vizcom Student .
- Pricing -> Scroll down ->Find Vizcom for Education -> Click learn more ->Get Student Account
- Important!: SIGN UP WITH YOUR BABSON EMAIL!!!
- Confirm email, finish login
- Create new workspace in top left after Edu account is registered for access to full tool
- Click Start in Workbench, then + → Import Image (upload your render).
- Note: If you're a bit more creative and want more control, you can sketch an image first on a blank piece of paper or by using the sketch feature under + in the top nav bar, upload that sketch into Vizcom and then render it using by clicking render.
Step 2: Explore Vizcom Tools - Refine
• Click the + in the top nav bar, then click desired control, drag + to image block.
- Modify: Adjust form, material, or style with natural language.
- Variate: Create alternate versions utilizing custom axes.
- New Views: Generate different angles (front, side, ¾).
- Mix: Blend designs together to achieve unique outputs.
- Animate: Visualize rotation or function. Product advertisement
Tip: Keep refining until your concept looks solid, and is close to what you were imagining in your mind. Utilize modify and variate tools to generate 100 different concepts, then go back through and select your favorite one. This is about curation and taste, not perfect creation.
Part C - 2D to 3D in Vizcom
Step 1: Click the three arrows in the top bar for more tools→ Generate 3D (Standard).
Step 2: Inspect the model. Rotate, zoom, check for missing elements
Step 3: Click the three dots (⋮) beside the model on side bar → Export → STL.
Step 4: Email the STL to yourself or save it to cloud storage.
Part D - Printing at Weissman Foundry (Bambu Studio)
Step 1: Log into a Foundry computer and download your STL that you emailed yourself.
Step 2: Open Bambu Studio → File → Import → [Your STL].
Step 3: Scale the model (use Scale Tool).
Step 4: Enable Supports → Tree Supports.
Step 5:Click Slice Plate → Preview → Send to Printer (per Foundry protocol).
Part E - Print & Reflect
- Wait for print completion before removing.
- Remove supports carefully; sand or paint if desired.
- Reflect on: What worked? What will you refine next time?
Have fun creating :) You now harness the power of accelerated prototyping with AI.
Pay Rate: $20
