Job Description

Job Summary

We, Mark and Amy, are looking for someone to help care for our adult 20-yr-old son with special needs. Our son lives on the east side of Madison, WI, and needs 24/7 care and support. Caregiver shifts are 24 hours long (7am to 7am)--$600 per shift. Currently, we have the following shift available: Start: 7am Friday – 7am Sunday (48-hrs). $600/day for a total of $1200 for the shift. (There are two other caregivers on our team: one does 3 days; one does 2.)

Brian has significant intellectual deficiencies and behavior disorders--and the combination of the two makes everyday life quite challenging for him. When he becomes overly confused, overwhelmed, frightened, or frustrated, he may escalate into a meltdown or panic attack. Caregivers must remain calm, patient, and able to use supportive strategies to help him return to a regulated, comfortable state. NOTE: Attacks/episodes typically include yelling, crying, and pacing but could potentially escalate into more aggressive behaviors such as pushing or hitting. Individualized training on who Brian is and how to best support him will be provided PRIOR to working with him. In addition, safety protocols are in place in order to provide the best possible living and working environment possible for everyone.

People often ask “how often” or “how bad” meltdowns/episodes occur or are. Most honest answer is that it really is hard to say for sure b/c it depends on so many factors. It can range from 0-2/week.

Brian's diagnosis: X-LID (x-linked intellectual disability).

He is very mobile and verbal - similar to a 3-6 yr old in terms of abilities and activities

Kind, gentle, and polite personality; no manipulative behaviors

Brian sleeps through the night--about 10 hrs/night

Responsibilities

  • Remain attentive and supportive at all times
  • Prepare and assist with meals
  • Maintain cleanliness of living spaces through light cleaning duties
  • Document daily activities
  • Communicate with us and other caregivers in order to provide the best continuity of care possible - transparency is KEY!

Requirements

  • Ability to appear calm, cool, and collected--especially in stressful situations.
  • Clean driving record with a reliable car to drive places with Brian (mileage will be reimbursed)
  • Must be able to speak clear and fluent English (Brian doesn’t understand those who speak with strong foreign accents)
  • Must be willing to have a background check run

This role is vital in supporting Brian's physical and emotional well-being. Anyone who has compassion for mentally disabled adults and would be interested in helping him and our family is encouraged to reach out and apply. Thanks for your time! Amy
