Role: Director, AI Editorial

The Britannica Group owns two of the world’s most valuable and trusted sources of knowledge: Encyclopaedia Britannica (established 1768) and Merriam-Webster (established 1825). Responsibilities: The Director, AI Editorial will be a dynamic leader for Britannica who drives our AI editorial efforts. Specifically, the director will have strong opinions and transformative ideas about how AI can be harnessed to supercharge our editorial ambitions. They will direct a wide variety of AI initiatives from the editorial side, everything from back-end processes to user-facing generation. They will establish standards for usage, pilot new tools, lead training, and constantly improve our processes.

The director will build and manage a small team, while also working across the broader Britannica editorial department as a go-to on all AI matters. Additionally, they will closely liaise with our technology and product teams, lending editorial support and ensuring a seamless integration across our company on a wide variety of priorities.

Importantly, the director will be an editor at heart – a skilled wordsmith capable of whipping a copy into shape for publication and dedicated to standards, style, and ethics. They will be comfortable working with visual media and understand every aspect of editorial workflow.

Finally, the director will be someone who fully recognizes the unique value of Britannica, and who brings a dedication to our mission of providing knowledge to the world.

Location: Chicagoland/Hybrid/Light Travel. *Can be remote for out of state applicants.

Qualifications:

• At least two years working with AI in an editorial setting.
• At least 10 years working as a professional editor.
• An impressive, varied portfolio of AI work.

Skills & Knowledge:

• Excellent writing and editing skills.
• Strong ideas of how AI can be used responsibly and effectively in an editorial setting.
• Savvy prompt-writing ability and an in-depth understanding of how to work with AI technologies to yield positive results.
• Experience working with product and technology teams, particularly with testing and iterating tools.
• Terrific editorial judgment and an understanding of the importance of standards, style, and tone.
• Experience working with visual media, copy department workflows, and a variety of subjects and topics.
• A wide range of knowledge and curiosity.
