Description The Part-Time Interpreter/Captionist is a part-time position responsible to the Coordinator, Hearing Loss Services and Director, Disability Services.
Essential Functions and Duties - Providing sign language interpreting/transliterating services for classroom, laboratory and other Tyler Junior College activities as assigned
- Supporting Captioning Work as needed
- Accepting regular and/or substitute disability accommodations assignments as necessary
- Providing office support including but not limited to: record keeping, filing, copying, faxing, Access data base management, Excel reporting and other computer based activities
- Assisting with scheduling and dispatching interpreter assignments
- Communicating effectively with Deaf/HoH publics of the College
- Assisting Interpreter/Coordinator in creating an atmosphere of cordiality and service for staff, program participants and other publics of the College
- Performing other duties as assigned by the Interpreter/Coordinator and Director of Disabilities
Competencies Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Strictly adhere to RID/BEI CPC (Code of Professional Conduct for Interpreters)
- Must be able to communicate effectively in person, and by email, in addition to engaging in general telephone/Videophone (VRS). assistance
- Excellent human relations skills required
- Must be able to be an independent problem solver, respect confidentiality and maintain courtesy in dealing with students, faculty, staff and visitors
- Must be available for morning/afternoon/night/weekend flexible scheduling
- Detail-oriented work habits and ability to meet required deadlines
Qualifications Preferred Education/Experience - Sign language interpreter with certification or degree
- Captioning experience
- Post-secondary interpreting experience
Supplemental Information Other Expectations - Perform other duties as assigned
- Will have contact - in person, by email, or by phone - with staff, students, and the general public
